Alert Brokers for Astrophysical Surveys: What is in it for CTA and how to engage

24/06/2021 @ 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM UTC

With the avalanche of alerts from the ongoing Zwicky Transient Facility and the upcoming Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time, limited follow-up resources will have to be deployed strategically, with a focus on maximizing science returns. This will mean identifying electromagnetic events (such as gamma rays) with high-energy particle and/or gravitational wave counterparts. In this talk, Gautham Narayan will describe the ANTARES alert broker system and how it uses machine learning to collate, characterize and classify the observations from different facilities to hunt for the rarest events in the time domain. He will describe how he is using real-time alerts from the ongoing Zwicky Transient Facility survey, and a massive simulation of the time-domain sky as a training set, as well as the way forward for the Rubin Observatory and how CTA can both publish and subscribe to these broker systems to coordinate observations.
